482 Are You Creating Space?
This is Anne with your Coaching On The Go.
I had the most fabulous day yesterday because I have these spaces in my calendar and blocks of work time.
Yesterday was a workday.
I want to share with you in a relaxed but diligent way so I don’t take too long, the beauty that unfolded yesterday in my schedule because I created space for it.
I got up early, naturally, and took a walk in a way that felt right for me.
I ended up walking past the nature camp, past the riverbend at SpiritRiver, down and around on a four-mile loop.
This loop took me down the middle of a county highway that’s normally well traveled in the morning, but that is being freshly black-topped so it’s barricaded off.
There were a couple of workers in there, but I had an opportunity to experience that road in a way I never get to before.
When I was in the midst of rock outcroppings on each side of the highway because it cuts through a state park, I got a phone call from someone I had been looking to hear from, the crew chief of the Amish crew.
Fern Valley Construction, has been with me through my renovation.
There are some loose ends, some caulking, and a ridge vent that needs to be put in.
Simon let me know that John was en route, my favorite worker.
It looked like by the time I got home from the last 2 miles of my walk, John would almost be at my driveway.
When I got back, I made breakfast and he showed up.
We went over things he was going to do for me to finish up projects or touch up things that needed to be touched up.
I let him know I would be back at about 3:30.
That’s when he had to leave.
I jumped in my car and I headed off to the library where I work.
There’s a room off to the side where nobody else is.
It’s small, it has a window so I can look outside, but there is no noise.
I headed into that room because I knew that is where I get the most concentrated work done without side-tracking.
Near the end of my block of time, I noticed I had a message from my farmer friend Donna, who lives up the road with her husband Jim.
She offered me an opportunity to come down for a shower.
I’ve been here since Monday and yesterday was Thursday.
Either I smelled on Wednesday night when she saw me and gave me fresh blueberries, or she just knew the time was right for me to get a shower.
But she offered, and I showed up over there.
When I stopped back at my place and got shampoo and a towel, I got to see what John was doing.
I continued to Donna and Jim’s.
It is very relaxing at this farm.
It’s right above the top of the Wisconsin River valley and all these dells.
When I get there, she usually shows me things in her garden.
She showed me how she stakes her tomatoes.
Jim came out and said that a friend of theirs caught some big catfish and was going to be over tomorrow night.
They wanted to know if I would love to come for a catfish dinner, to which I said yes and asked what I could bring.
We headed into their little trailer house, and I got a shower, a quick shower.
On my way out, she said, Donna said, “Would you like a root beer float?” to which I responded, “Yes, of course”.
She made them and we went out onto her porch, sat listening to crickets and things, and chatting about Amish culture and a talk she had gone to at the library about the Amish community that’s closest to Wisconsin Dells.
When we were done, I was concerned I had been there for hours and wanted to make sure that I was back on time to say goodbye to John to find out anything I needed to find out before he left (the crew doesn’t walk around with cell phones).
I looked at my cell phone.
It was 20 after three, perfect.
I took my dishes to the kitchen, thanked Donna, gave her a hug, jumped in the car, and was back in time to engage with John, see everything he had completed, and when he would be coming back, in a very relaxing conversation.
He left with my great appreciation.
I had an opportunity to make dinner and dance a little bit on my deck because I felt so happy.
Then I went into the sleeping quarters, had dinner, and listened to the most beautiful classical piano music on a little speaker I have from my son.
As it got darker and darker outside, I ended the day by reading a book I grabbed at the last minute on my way out of the library called The Orchid Thief.
I’ve been growing orchids for 20 years or more, almost 30.
There are orchids, as you may know, on the cliffs of SpiritRiver, Pink Moccasin Flowers.
They are cypripediums.
So that book attracted me, I grabbed it, and had time to do leisure reading.
I haven’t done leisure reading in such a long time.
I was so happy.
I ended the day with a meditation.
That is a day of serendipity, sponsored by having a beautiful calendar that honors me as a human being.
It honors my interest in getting things done, the DO-ing, and having space for inspiration and allowing, which is the BE-ing.
How can you set up a schedule like that so you can have your version of the Amazing Day?
Have a beautiful day.
